Academic Qualifications and Research Visits

1994 PhD in philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Methodological Problems of Research on the Symbolism of Rituals of Death in Early Traditional Societies, supervisor Prof. dr hab. Anna Pałubicka.

2002 Habilitation in philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, on the basis of the book Pre-Philosophical Thought. Studies in the Philosophy of Culture and the History of the Idea.

1991 Research period at Warsaw University in the field of Archaeology and Ethnology.

1997 Research period at in the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in historical ethnology and linguistics.

2009 Research period at the University of London in Ancient Anthropology and Indo-European Studies.

Teaching Interests: History of Philosophy, the Theory of Culture, the Anthropology of Culture, the Prehistory of Art.


Research Activities: Amongst collaboration in various projects, the most important of these was “Eidolon”, a project that was carried out in co-operation with research institutes in Germany, and with the participation of representatives of various disciplines in the humanities from Poland. This project has yielded numerous publications. The first bears the title Eidolon. Archaic Culture in the Reflection of Imagination, Words and Objects (2000). Successive publications are Constructivism in the Humanities (2003), Thought and Culture (2004), Axiological Sources of Ideas (2005), Ontological Security (2008), Language and Representation (2008). All of these works are collected volumes, of which I am the co-editor. A second research project, stretching over many years, concerns the themes of artistic production in early societies, and () has resulted in the Aesthetics in Archaeology volumes 1 (2003), 2 (2006), and 3 (2010).

Organizational Activity:

1. Secretary of the International Commission for Language, operating from the Sub-Faculty for Classical Philology of the University of Łódz from 1998.

2. Member of the Commission for the History and Methodology of Archaeological Research of the Research Committee for Pre-and Proto-Historical Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences, from 1999.

3. Vice Dean for Research of the History Faculty of Gdańsk University (2008-2012).

Research Topics:

The Philosophy and Cultural Anthropology of Proto-Historical Societies; Archaic Forms of Worldview and Experiences; So-Called Ethno-Philosophy, the Theory of Myth and Magical Thought; Linguistic Reconstructions of Ancient Categories of Culture (the Prehistory of the Idea and Imagination in the Context of Ethics and Aesthetics). Based on Empirical Methodology: Knowledge Indo-European and Nostratic Lexicography, the Archaeology and Art of the Ancient Communities of the Barbaricum
